Head Groundsperson - Wetherby Racecourse

Wetherby Racecourse is seeking an experienced, dedicated and proactive individual to take on the position of Head Groundsperson and lead the upkeep and development of our racetrack and grounds.

Set within 295 acres of Yorkshire countryside, Wetherby Racecourse has the huge benefit of a fantastic setting to accompany all our exciting race meetings and events. Racing has taken place on the site since 1891, with Wetherby Racecourse now staging some of Jump Racing’s early season highlights, in the bet365 Charlie Hall and the William Hill Rowland Meyrick Steeplechase on Boxing Day, as well as a small, but competitive, flat racing programme in May / June.

Key Responsibilities:

Oversee the preparation and maintenance of the turf racing surface and associated grounds

Manage a small team of groundstaff and seasonal workers

Operate and maintain tractors, machinery and irrigation systems

Ensure compliance with BHA regulations and health & safety standards

Contribute to planning for course improvements and long-term grounds strategy

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:

Proven experience in grounds management, preferably in a racing or sports turf environment.

Obvious leadership and organisational skills.

Knowledge of machinery and turf management best practices.

The ability to oversee all necessary regulations and safe working practices as specified by current legislation.

A flexible approach, with the ability to work raceday hours including bank holidays and weekends as required.

Relevant qualifications in turf management or a related discipline (desirable).

Flexible approach to working.

Good Communication Skills.

Enjoy outdoor working.
